Austria is a Hague Apostille country and accepts Indian MEA apostille. Most academic, civil, and Red-White-Red Card applications additionally need certified German translation by an allgemein beeideter und gerichtlich zertifizierter Dolmetscher (court-sworn translator) listed in Austria. The India-side steps is state-level pre-attestation, then MEA apostille, then certified German translation. Austrian sworn translators are listed separately from German ones, so submissions to Austrian authorities should use an Austria-list translator.

NRI Document Legalisation Service From India

For a Austria file, we can start with scans while the originals remain with family in India. After confirming the recipient's route, we coordinate pickup, the accepted state and MEA steps, and return delivery.

Austria: route, translation and receiving authority

Austria runs busy on three desks for us. Red-White-Red Card (Rot-Weiß-Rot-Karte) for skilled workers, scientists, very-high-paid workers, graduates, and shortage-occupation roles. EU Blue Card for high-skilled professionals above the salary threshold. Student admissions at the University of Vienna, TU Wien, University of Graz, and the medical universities in Vienna and Graz.

Austria is Hague (EIF 13 January 1968). State HRD on educational documents, SDM or Home on personal documents, then MEA apostille. That is the India-side steps.

For German translation, Austria runs its own roster of court-sworn translators (allgemein beeideter und gerichtlich zertifizierter Dolmetscher) maintained by the Austrian Ministry of Justice. Most Austrian authorities including the Bezirkshauptmannschaft (district administrative authority), Austrian universities, and the AMS (Public Employment Service) expect translation by someone on the Austrian roster, not the German one. We coordinate translation through Austrian-list court-sworn translators.

For degree recognition, Nostrifizierung is the formal Austrian recognition process at the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) or the relevant Austrian university. It runs separately from the apostille and the visa.

Red-White-Red Card is points-based. The points calculation, the employer offer, and the document workflow (apostilled and translated degree, transcripts, experience certificates) all feed into the application.

Accepted translator

Avoid this mistake

India side, by city & state

Where your Austria case usually starts in India

Indian-side authentication is state-led: educational documents go through your degree's issuing state HRD, and personal documents go through SDM or the Home Department of your domicile state. These are the state HRDs and city pickup pages most Austria cases actually run through.

Timeline, Cost Factors & Rejection Risks

Typical Timeline

India-side MEA apostille is 2-3 working days after readiness; State HRD before MEA varies by state. We confirm the committed schedule after reviewing the case.

Cost Depends On

Document type and issuing state
HRD requirement for educational documents
Certified German translation page count (Austrian sworn translator)
Red-White-Red Card, EU Blue Card, or student visa supporting paperwork
Degree recognition / nostrification (university or BMBWF)
Urgency and pickup city

Common Rejection Reasons

Submitting German translation by a translator not on the Austrian sworn list
Missing State HRD for educational documents going through nostrification
Incomplete points-test documentation for Red-White-Red Card
Name mismatch across passport, degree, and Austrian employer documents

How SiZA Global Handles It

Reviews the Austrian recipient instruction (university, AMS, embassy, district administrative authority) before processing
Coordinates HRD, MEA apostille, and Austrian-list German translation
Packages documents for Red-White-Red Card, EU Blue Card, student, and family reunion pathways
Tracks each document from intake through return

Checks before sending Austria documents

Austria accepts MEA apostille as the final India-side stamp. No Austrian embassy attestation step.

For German translation, prefer Austrian-roster court-sworn translators (allgemein beeideter und gerichtlich zertifizierter Dolmetscher) over German-roster ones. The two registers are separate even though the language is the same.

Red-White-Red Card is points-based. The employer-offer points, qualification points, and experience points all need apostilled and translated supporting documents.

Nostrifizierung is decided in Austria. We prepare the input apostilled and translated documents.

EU Blue Card in Austria uses the same India-side steps. The Austrian salary threshold for the Blue Card changes annually.

India-Side Legalisation

Hague Apostille

Final India-side stamp
MEA apostille (State HRD on educational documents, SDM or Home Department on personal documents)
Translation
German (Austrian-roster sworn translator)
Austrian-list court-sworn translator (allgemein beeideter und gerichtlich zertifizierter Dolmetscher) on the Austrian Ministry of Justice register. The German-roster sworn translators are a separate list and Austrian authorities usually do not accept their translations.
Typical India-side turnaround
MEA apostille: 2-3 working days after readiness. State HRD before MEA: varies by state.
Austrian-list sworn translation after apostille. Nostrifizierung at BMBWF or the relevant Austrian university for regulated-profession cases. Per the Austrian Embassy New Delhi, the 1961 Hague Convention means India and Austria mutually recognise public documents without embassy or consulate legalisation; the MEA apostille is the single India-side step. SiZA Global coordinates the Austrian-roster allgemein beeideter Dolmetscher German translation as part of the document preparation and translation work.
Hague status verified against HCCH status table.

Austria document questions

Does Austria accept MEA apostille from India?

Yes. Austria has been a Hague Apostille member since 13 January 1968. MEA apostille from India is the final India-side stamp. No Austrian embassy attestation step. Sworn German translation by an Austrian-roster court-sworn translator is usually required after apostille.

Can I use a German court-sworn translation in Austria?

In practice, often not. Austria maintains its own register of court-sworn translators (allgemein beeideter und gerichtlich zertifizierter Dolmetscher) at the Austrian Ministry of Justice, and most Austrian authorities expect translation by someone on that register, not the German one. We coordinate translation through Austrian-list contacts as part of the documents.
