SpainApostille & Document Services from India

Spain student and work visas are common with families heading to Madrid, Barcelona, or Valencia. What Spain wants is consistent. Apostilled degree, transcripts, birth certificate, PCC, and certified Spanish translation by a sworn translator (traductor jurado). We prepare the whole set before the BLS appointment so the documents get accepted on the first submission.

Spain accepts the MEA apostille from India. The translation rule is what catches Indian applicants off guard: most Spanish authorities will not accept a Spanish translation done in India, only one done by a Traductor Jurado on the Spanish MAEC roster.

Spain is a Hague Apostille country and accepts Indian MEA apostille. Most academic, civil, and visa files additionally need certified Spanish translation by a Traductor Jurado (sworn translator certified by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The India-side steps is state-level pre-attestation → MEA apostille → certified Spanish translation. NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) and homologación (degree-equivalence) are separate steps handled in Spain.

Overview

Spain runs through three or four lanes for Indian families. Bachelor and Master admissions at Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Salamanca. Non-Lucrative Residence for retired NRIs and remote-income earners. Work visas tied to a Spanish employer (almost always shortage-occupation roles). And the Digital Nomad Visa for IT freelancers, which has been the busiest of the four since 2023.

India-side, the sequence is short and consistent. State HRD on educational documents, SDM or Home on personal documents, then MEA apostille. Spain is a Hague country and the apostille is the last India-side stamp.

The translation is where most Indian agencies get Spain wrong. The Spanish Consulate, autonomous communities, universities and the SEPE typically require translation by a Traductor Jurado, a sworn translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC) and listed on their public registry. A general certified Spanish translation done in India is not enough for most submissions. We coordinate the apostille first, then route translation through the Traductor Jurado who handles the apostilled document so the apostille text, seals and stamps are also rendered in Spanish.

For regulated professions (doctors, nurses, engineers, lawyers), the homologación process at the Spanish Ministry of Universities or the relevant professional body is a separate case that runs alongside. It is decided by Spain, not by us. We prepare the apostilled and sworn-translated documents in the format that case expects.

India side, by city & state

Where your Spain case usually starts in India

Indian-side authentication is state-led: educational documents go through your degree's issuing state HRD, and personal documents go through SDM or the Home Department of your domicile state. These are the state HRDs and city pickup pages most Spain cases actually run through.

Timeline, Cost Factors & Rejection Risks

Typical Timeline

India-side MEA apostille is 2-3 working days after readiness; State HRD before MEA varies by state. We confirm the committed schedule after reviewing the case.

Cost Depends On

Document type and issuing state
HRD requirement for educational documents
Certified Spanish (Traductor Jurado) translation page count
Visa type: student, work, family reunion, non-lucrative residence
Homologación supporting paperwork for regulated professions
Urgency and pickup city

Common Rejection Reasons

Submitting documents without Traductor Jurado-certified Spanish translation
Missing State HRD for educational documents going through homologación
Submitting an ordinary translation where the Spanish consulate or autonomous community requires sworn translation
Name mismatch across passport, degree, and Spanish visa-application documents

How SiZA Global Handles It

Important Information & Requirements

Spain accepts MEA apostille as the final India-side legalisation. No Spanish embassy attestation step.

For most Spanish authorities, certified Spanish translation has to be done by a Traductor Jurado on the MAEC sworn-translator roster, not by a general translator in India. Treat this as a hard rule unless your specific recipient has told you otherwise in writing.

Apostille the document first, translate after. The Traductor Jurado has to translate the apostille text, seals and stamps along with the body of the document. Translating before apostille means redoing the translation.

PCC apostille and sworn Spanish translation is required for the student visa and Non-Lucrative Residence.

Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country may also accept or require translation into the regional language for autonomous-community submissions. Spanish Consulate submissions in Delhi or Mumbai usually accepts Castilian Spanish.

NIE (the Spanish foreigner identification number) and empadronamiento (the town-hall registration) are post-arrival steps in Spain. Not India-side, not apostille.

SiZA Global works closely with MAEC-roster Traductor Jurado translators in Spain and can arrange the official sworn translation as part of the end-to-end documentation service for customers, rather than asking the customer to find a translator themselves. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need apostille or embassy attestation for Spain?

Spain is Hague, so MEA apostille from India is the final India-side stamp. No Spanish embassy attestation step. What you do also need for most submissions is a sworn Spanish translation by a Traductor Jurado on the MAEC roster, done after the apostille so the apostille text is also translated.

Can I get the Spanish translation done in India?

For most Spanish authorities, no. A general certified Spanish translation done in India is usually not accepted by the Spanish Consulate, the autonomous communities or universities. They expect translation by a Traductor Jurado (sworn translator) appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC) and listed on the public registry. We coordinate this through Traductor Jurado contacts so you do not have to source one yourself from India.

I am applying for the Digital Nomad Visa. What does the India side look like?

For an Indian remote worker applying for the Digital Nomad Visa, the India-side documents are usually your degree, transcripts, PCC and any company-issued paperwork the visa file needs. Degree and transcripts go through State HRD plus MEA apostille. PCC goes through SDM plus MEA apostille. After apostille, all of these need sworn Spanish translation. The income proof and contract side is handled in Spanish or English and submitted directly to the consulate.

What is homologación and do I have to do it before the visa?

Homologación is the Spanish recognition of your foreign degree, run by the Ministry of Universities or the relevant professional body (different bodies for doctors, nurses, engineers, lawyers). It is decided in Spain and runs on its own timeline. For most non-regulated jobs and for university admission, you do not need homologación. For regulated professions, you do, and the case usually wants apostilled and sworn-translated copies. We prepare those.
