Indian apostille is a stamp that can only be issued in India, by the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi. Indian embassies and consulates abroad cannot apostille Indian-issued documents, that is a question we get from NRIs in almost every country every week, and the answer is the same in each case. The good news is that the apostille steps does not need the document-owner to be physically in India: the work happens in India between the issuing state, the State HRD or SDM office, and the MEA, and the document can be couriered to India by a family member, friend or local custodian. The applicant abroad coordinates by scan review and WhatsApp.
Start while you're still abroad
The most common NRI work we run from abroad are: degree apostille for a new employer or licensing body, birth certificate apostille for a child being added to a dependent visa, marriage certificate apostille for a family reunion or status update, police clearance certificate apostille for a residence-permit renewal that has a freshness window, and one-off civil documents (divorce decree, death certificate, name-change affidavit) for use in a foreign court or registry. Each of those has a slightly different India-side path because the government check before MEA step is determined by the document type and the issuing state, not by the destination country.
The work in India proceeds in three blocks: government check before MEA verification (which is the slowest and most state-specific step, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and several other HRDs each have their own working pace and rules on university verification), then MEA apostille (typically 2 to 4 working days once the work is ready), then certified translation only if the receiving authority requires it. Once apostille is done, the document is couriered to the address abroad by DHL or FedEx with a tracked AWB number we share in writing. The applicant can track delivery without our involvement.

What is an apostille?
An apostille is a single official stamp issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on the back of an Indian document. Once placed, the document is accepted in any country that is a member of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, about 125 countries today, including the USA, UK, Italy, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia (since 2022), and Canada (since 2024). For non-Hague destinations such as UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya, and Egypt, MEA apostille alone is not enough, the document needs MEA attestation plus the destination country's embassy attestation in India.
Is apostille required for Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in December 2022. For Indian documents going to Saudi Arabia today, MEA apostille (after the relevant pre-step, State HRD for educational documents, SDM or Home Department for civil documents) is the standard India-side authentication. The previous Saudi Embassy + Cultural Attaché route was discontinued in December 2022; some Saudi employers still ask for QVP / Mosaddaqa qualification verification or SCFHS DataFlow PSV separately for licensed professions.
