Italy is the destination that rejects generic certified Italian translation most often, on student visas, on the Dichiarazione di Valore (DoV), on family reunion under Nulla Osta, on Decreto Flussi employment files. Italian translation: key facts for 2026
- • Italian Embassy New Delhi and Italian Consulate General Mumbai maintain separate empanelled-translator lists by Indian jurisdiction. Embassy in Delhi covers North and East India universities; Consulate in Mumbai covers West and South. Routing through the wrong jurisdiction's translator gets the DoV submission bounced.
- • Italy explicitly rejects SDM-route attestation on educational documents. Indian degrees going to Italy require State HRD attestation from the issuing state (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, UP, Delhi, AP/Telangana) before MEA apostille.
- • Translation runs after the apostille so the apostille stamp text is also rendered in the Italian version. Submitting a pre-apostille translation forces a redo.
- • Dichiarazione di Valore (DoV) at the Italian Embassy New Delhi or Italian Consulate General Mumbai takes 5 to 15 working days after the apostilled-and-Italian-translated documents are submitted.
- • CIMEA academic equivalency in Rome for Italian university admission additionally asks for sealed transcripts mailed directly from the issuing Indian university to CIMEA. Apostille is necessary but not sufficient for CIMEA assessment.
- • Nulla Osta family reunion through Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione (SUI) has a 6-month validity window from issue. Spouse-supporting documents (marriage certificate, single status, birth certificates of children) feed into the SUI application.
- • Italian Embassy DoV counter has zero tolerance for name-spelling mismatches. The accepted fix is a Tehsildar one-and-same certificate, not a notarised affidavit.

Italy is unforgiving on documentation. Italian Embassy New Delhi and Italian Consulate General Mumbai both publish checklists. We work to those checklists, not to a generic Italian-language SEO page.
Italian student visa (Study D)
Degree, transcript, school leaving certificate, birth certificate, PCC, migration certificate. HRD attestation has to come before MEA apostille for Italy. The Italian Embassy New Delhi DoV checklist explicitly rejects SDM-route attestation. Italian translation comes after apostille, through an Embassy or Consulate empanelled translator. The asseverazione page at the Italian court may then carry its own apostille for some uses.
DoV (Dichiarazione di Valore in loco)
DoV is the Italian Embassy or Consulate-issued declaration of value. It confirms the Indian qualification's value under Italian law. Older route, paper-based, can take months at busy missions. The Italian Embassy New Delhi DoV checklist asks for HRD authentication and MEA apostille on the degree, transcript and any other educational document going through DoV. SDM stamp is not accepted in that route.
CIMEA (Statement of Comparability and Verification)
CIMEA is the Italian NARIC equivalent. Newer, digital, blockchain-stored. Many Italian universities now accept CIMEA in place of DoV. The platform has its own document upload rules and a daily request limit during busy windows. CIMEA does not replace DoV in every case; some public-funded scholarships still require DoV, some private universities accept only CIMEA, many accept either. The university confirms what it accepts.
Family reunion under Nulla Osta
For a wife, husband or child joining an Indian or other non-EU sponsor who is legally resident in Italy, family reunion runs on a Nulla Osta from the Italian Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione. The Nulla Osta is valid for 6 months. Marriage certificate and birth certificate translation to Italian comes through Embassy or Consulate empanelled translators. For wife / husband joining an Italian or EU citizen, the route is different and runs on EU family member rules.
Employment under Decreto Flussi or work file
Italian employment visa runs on a Nulla Osta from the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione, with the C-Stag form filed by the employer on the ALI portal. Degree, experience certificate, PCC and sworn declaration packs go to Italian translation through empanelled translators. The Nulla Osta is valid for 6 months from issuance; the visa appointment must be booked within that window.
Research D and seafarer files
Research D is for researchers with a Nulla Osta from the competent Italian authority. Seafarer files run on a separate checklist with seaman's book, ship-owner request, ETA / ETD confirmed by Italian Port Authorities, employment contract and manning agreement. Italian translation supports the host agreement and supporting documents.

- The Italian Consulate General in Mumbai maintains its own list for documents submitted to the Consulate and to VFS Italy in West India.
- SiZA itself is not on either list. We will not claim that we are.
- What SiZA does is work closely with translators who are on those lists. The file is routed through one of them so the Embassy or Consulate accepts the translation when it lands.
- A generic certified Italian translation, even a good one, is often rejected at the DoV counter or at the university registry when the destination expects an empanelled translator.
Which Indian documents go to Italy most often in 2026?

Degree certificate
For Italy student visa, DoV and most university registries: HRD attestation in the issuing state, then MEA apostille, then Italian translation through an empanelled translator. SDM-route is not accepted in the New Delhi Study D checklist or in the DoV checklist.
Transcript and consolidated marksheet
University-issued transcript with HRD attestation, MEA apostille, Italian translation by empanelled translator. Provisional study certificate is accepted in the New Delhi Study D route if it has HRD attestation and apostille and is issued by the relevant university.
Birth certificate
Birth certificate for student visa (where the university asks), family reunion, and minor travel. Italian Embassy expects the birth certificate to show both parents' names matching the marriage certificate and passport.
Marriage certificate
For family reunion: Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati marriage certificates issued by gram panchayats or local registrars need English translation, SDM countersign, MEA apostille, then Italian translation by empanelled translator.
PCC for Italy work and family files
PCC from PSK in English, MEA apostille, Italian translation by empanelled translator. For Italian work files where the PCC originates outside India, the local-country apostille rule applies.
Tehsildar one and same certificate
If passport, degree, transcript, marksheet or marriage certificate names do not match exactly, the Italian Embassy New Delhi DoV checklist asks for a one and same certificate issued by the competent Tehsildar for the applicant's residence. Regular notarised affidavits are not accepted for that DoV mismatch case.
Family member sworn declaration
For dependent parent visa, an affidavit from parents stating economic condition and details of all children. Notarised, then SDM or Deputy Commissioner countersign, then Home Secretary of State, then MEA apostille, then Italian translation through empanelled translator.
Commercial files for Italian entity setup
MOA, AOA, board resolution, commercial invoice for Italian subsidiary, branch or partnership. Chamber of Commerce attestation in the state of registration, then MEA apostille, then Italian translation through empanelled translator.

HRD, not SDM, for Italy educational files
Italian Embassy New Delhi explicitly rejects SDM-route attestation for educational documents going through DoV. HRD attestation in the issuing state has to come first. This is the single most common reason Italy student files get bounced.
Asseverazione, not the translation page, carries the apostille
For some Italy uses, the sworn declaration (asseverazione) signed at an Italian court by the translator is the document that gets the apostille. The translation pages themselves are not the apostille target. We coordinate this where the destination authority asks for the asseverazione apostille.
Pre-enrolment letter as DoV substitute
Italian Embassy New Delhi DoV processing has historically been slow. Some Italian universities issue a pre-enrolment letter that allows the visa to be filed with DoV pending. CIMEA Statement of Comparability is increasingly accepted as a substitute by newer private universities. Confirm with the specific university before paying for DoV.
Nulla Osta validity is 6 months
Italian employment, research and family reunion Nulla Osta are valid 6 months from issuance. The visa appointment has to be booked within that window. If the appointment is booked within the 6 months, the application may stay valid even if the appointment date falls after expiry.
Name match across passport, certificate and translation
Italian DoV and Italian universities cross-check passport, degree, transcript and Italian translation name spellings. A middle-name initial expanded on passport versus contracted on transcript is enough to flag. Italian Embassy New Delhi is strict; rejection follows mismatches.
Universitaly pre-enrolment and ALI portal
Italian student admissions move through Universitaly pre-enrolment; Italian employment files reference the ALI portal C-Stag form filed by the employer. Italian translation supports these but does not replace them.
How does SiZA handle an Italian case end to end?
Italy is the destination that punishes loose handling most. The first thing we do on an Italian case is brief the customer on what Italy actually accepts: HRD not SDM for educational documents, empanelled translators for Embassy and Consulate submissions, Tehsildar one and same for name mismatches, asseverazione for the apostille step where the destination asks. The original document is logged with a Customer ID and Document ID at the Noida office.

Why does Italy reject SDM-attested degrees?
For educational documents going through the New Delhi DoV process, the Italian Embassy explicitly accepts HRD authentication and MEA apostille; SDM is not accepted in that route. Italy and Austria are the two destinations where the SDM shortcut breaks. Many vendors push SDM for speed without disclosing this; the documents then bounces at the DoV counter.
My passport name is "Akhil Vijay" and my degree shows "Akhil V". Italy DoV is asking for a one and same. What is the path?

Should I get DoV or CIMEA?
The Italian university tells you which one to use. CIMEA is faster and newer; many Italian universities now accept CIMEA in place of DoV. Some scholarships and some public universities still require DoV. We will not blindly push you down one option. Confirm with the university first, then we run the documentation work for the path you actually need.

I have a Nulla Osta in hand. How long does the Italian translation step take?
It depends on the document set and the empanelled translator's queue at the time. Embassy-empanelled translators in India typically move within 5 to 10 working days for a standard family reunion or student pack. We confirm a real turnaround before accepting the documents.
Can I get the Italian translation done after I land in Italy?
For most family reunion, student visa, employment and research files, the Italian translation has to be on the documents at submission to VFS or to the Embassy in India. Some specific commune-level processes after arrival accept Italy-side translation by a local CTU. We confirm what is needed at submission versus after arrival, per case.
