UAE Family Visa Certificate Attestation Guide

A UAE family-visa file (sponsor in the UAE, family in India or arriving in the UAE) runs on two distinct sub-routes depending on the Emirate. For Dubai, the employer or sponsor issues an e-visa from the GDRFA portal once the attested family-relationship documents are submitted; GAMCA and conventional passport visa-stamping at the UAE Embassy in India are not part of the Dubai family file. For Abu Dhabi, GAMCA is mandatory, the visa is sent to the UAE Embassy in India for stamping, and the candidate visits the relevant UAE diplomatic mission in Delhi or a regional consulate for the stamp. The document attestation chain is the same for both sub-routes; what differs is the visa-issuance step at the destination.

The document set on a UAE family-visa file is centred on the marriage certificate, the birth certificates of the dependent children, and (in some cases) a single-status or no-objection certificate for previously married spouses. UAE non-Hague attestation chain is Notary, SDM or Home Department / NRI Office at the issuing state, MEA attestation, then UAE Embassy attestation in India through the VFS Global or BLS International channel. UAE MOFA now happens in India in the same Embassy-VFS-BLS workflow; the document does not need to be sent to UAE for a separate MOFA step (this changed approximately a year before this guide was written; older guides still describe the old MOFA-in-UAE process).

A practical UAE family-file issue: religious-only marriage certificates (church, masjid, gurudwara, mandap) that were never registered with the civil marriage registrar are commonly questioned by the UAE family-visa medical centre even after a clean attestation chain. Where the marriage was not civilly registered in India, we advise registering it now under the relevant state's marriage-registration rules and then running the chain. The birth certificates of children should show both parents' names matching the passports; "baby of [father]" entries in older municipal records are a recurring blocker on UAE family files and need a Tehsildar One and Same Certificate or, in some states, a fresh certified copy from the municipal corporation before the chain is started.

Certified Arabic translation is required for the marriage certificate, birth certificates, and any single-status or no-objection document going to UAE. The Arabic translation is done after the full attestation chain is complete (after UAE Embassy attestation), so the Arabic version covers the Embassy stamps and the MEA seal together with the document body. Send clear scans of the marriage certificate, the birth certificates of the dependent children, the passport name pages of the sponsor and the family members, and any single-status document on WhatsApp +91-9220161774 with the Emirate (Dubai, Abu Dhabi or other), the sponsor's visa category, and the deadline. SiZA Global confirms the SDM or Home Department route for your issuing state, any name or registration issue seen in the scan, the UAE Embassy timeline through VFS or BLS, the UAE official attestation fee (AED 315 per personal document plus the processing fees, verified close to publication), the Arabic translation, and a written quote that separates each fee before originals move.

Who this guide is for

  • Indian husbands working in Dubai or Abu Dhabi who need to add a wife to the family visa, the marriage certificate, sponsor employment letter, and dependent passport scans go through the chain together
  • Families adding children to an existing UAE residence visa, the birth certificates of each dependent child go through SDM or Home Department, MEA, and UAE Embassy attestation through VFS or BLS in India
  • Indian wives joining husbands in the UAE for the first time, where the marriage certificate is the relationship proof at the UAE family-visa medical centre and the sponsor side has to be ready before the file moves
  • Indian husbands renewing the family residence visa where the sponsor or family-visa medical centre asks for a fresh attested marriage certificate (some recipients want a freshness window within six months)
  • NRIs already in the UAE whose family is in India, where the marriage and birth certificates have to be coordinated through a family member or local contact in India while the sponsor handles the UAE side

Documents typically needed

  • Original civil-registered marriage certificate (religious-only certificates are not accepted by UAE family-visa medical centres)
  • Original birth certificates of dependent children with both parents' names matching the passports
  • Passport copies of the sponsor and the dependent family members
  • Sponsor employment letter (where the destination authority asks for it) attested through Chamber of Commerce, MEA, and UAE Embassy
  • Single-status or no-objection certificate for previously married spouses where the UAE recipient asks for it
  • Tehsildar One and Same Certificate where a child's birth certificate shows "baby of [father]" or a name does not match the passport

How a SiZA file usually moves

1

Send clear scans of the marriage certificate, birth certificates of dependent children, sponsor and family-member passport name pages, and the Emirate (Dubai or Abu Dhabi) on WhatsApp +91-9220161774

2

We confirm the chain for each document (SDM or Home Department, MEA attestation, UAE Embassy attestation through VFS or BLS), the Arabic translation timing, and the realistic working-day timeline

3

Originals are couriered to our Noida office through doorstep pickup, or family member couriers them to us, written acknowledgement on receipt

4

Full chain runs in our presence (SDM or Home Department at the issuing state, MEA Delhi, UAE Embassy in India), with WhatsApp updates at each handoff

5

Arabic translation prepared after the UAE Embassy step, then the full file is tracked-couriered to the sponsor in the UAE (or the family in India if the sponsor will pick up locally)

Before any original leaves your hands

Standard scan-review checks

  1. 1

A UAE family visa file is mostly about the marriage certificate, the birth certificates of dependent children, the sponsor identity and residence details, and Arabic translation. UAE MOFA is no longer a separate Dubai step. It is consolidated into the UAE Embassy attestation in India, so we do not have to chase a MOFA stamp after arrival in Dubai or Abu Dhabi any more.

  2. 2

Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the northern emirates have small differences in what they expect at submission. We capture the emirate and the sponsor instructions at the start so the file matches the right counter. For example, Dubai usually issues an e-visa after legalised documents are submitted to the employer, while Abu Dhabi expects GAMCA medical and passport stamping at the UAE Embassy in India.

  3. 3

Dependent files need a careful check before they leave. Relationship proof, passport spelling against the certificates, certificate registration details on the Indian side, and whether the UAE office wants Arabic translation after attestation. Catching name mismatches early (with a Tehsildar-issued One and Same Certificate where needed) saves the family from a visa-side rejection later.

What typically affects timeline

  • Issuing state's SDM or Home Department working pace (Maharashtra, UP, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana each have their own pace, ranging 8 to 30 working days)
  • MEA attestation pace, typically 2 to 3 working days after state-side completion
  • UAE Embassy attestation through VFS or BLS, 6 to 10 working days normal, 4 to 6 days urgent
  • Arabic translation page count, typically 1 to 3 working days for a small family-file translation set
  • International courier transit from Noida to the sponsor's UAE address (typically 2 to 5 days through DHL or FedEx)

Common mistakes we see

  • Bringing a religious-only marriage certificate (church, masjid, gurudwara, mandap) that was never civilly registered, gets returned at the UAE family-visa medical centre even after a clean attestation chain
  • Birth certificate that shows "baby of [father]" or has parent names that do not match the passports, needs a Tehsildar One and Same Certificate or a fresh certified copy from the municipal corporation before the chain begins
  • Doing the Arabic translation before the UAE Embassy step, the Arabic version then does not cover the Embassy stamps and has to be redone
  • Apostille on the marriage certificate instead of UAE Embassy attestation, UAE is not a Hague country, the apostille does not work for UAE family visa, the certificate needs full Embassy attestation
  • Submitting a previously attested marriage certificate that is older than the UAE family-visa medical centre's freshness window, the certificate has to be re-attested when the window is short

Why work with SiZA

  • Emirate-specific routing built into the workflow, Dubai e-visa via the GDRFA sponsor portal versus Abu Dhabi GAMCA-plus-visa-stamping at the UAE Embassy in India, we ask for the Emirate and the sponsor visa category before any chain runs
  • Religious-only marriage certificate handling, where the marriage was at a church, masjid, gurudwara, or mandap and never civilly registered, we advise on the state-side civil-registration step first so the certificate does not get returned at the UAE family-visa medical centre
  • Name and parent-name reconciliation on birth certificates handled in advance, "baby of [father]" entries from older municipal records, Hindi-script-versus-English transliteration variants, or initials-versus-expanded variants are addressed before any original moves to the chain
  • UAE Embassy plus UAE MOFA in one workflow in India through VFS Global or BLS International, we run the file as one chain and the document does not need to be sent to the UAE for a separate MOFA step (this changed approximately a year ago)
  • Arabic translation by registered translators after the UAE Embassy step, so the Arabic version covers the Embassy stamps and the MEA seal together with the document body; consistent transliteration across the marriage certificate, birth certificates, and sponsor letter so the UAE family-visa medical centre does not query a mismatch

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add my wife to my UAE family visa with a religious marriage certificate?

The UAE family-visa medical centre and the GDRFA usually do not accept religious-only marriage certificates (church, masjid, gurudwara, mandap) that were never registered with the civil marriage registrar in India. The cleanest path is to register the marriage now under your state's marriage-registration rules (Hindu Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, or the applicable state rule), get the civil marriage certificate, and then run the attestation chain. The civil-registered certificate is what the UAE side accepts.

My child's birth certificate says "baby of [father]" instead of the child's name. Will UAE accept it?

No, the UAE family-visa medical centre will query a "baby of" entry because the document does not name the child. The fix has two paths depending on the issuing state. Some municipal corporations will issue a fresh certified copy of the birth certificate with the child's name added from their records. Where they will not, a Tehsildar One and Same Certificate connecting the "baby of" entry to the child's passport name is accepted. We advise which path applies for your issuing state at scan review.

Does UAE family-visa attestation still need to go to UAE for MOFA?

No, this changed approximately a year ago. UAE Embassy attestation and UAE MOFA now happen together in India through the VFS Global or BLS International channel; the document does not need to be sent to UAE for a separate MOFA step. Older guides still describe the old MOFA-in-UAE process, that information is now out of date.

Is the apostille enough for UAE family visa?

No, UAE is not a Hague Apostille Convention member, so the MEA apostille alone is not accepted for UAE family-visa documents. The chain is Notary, SDM or Home Department at the issuing state, MEA attestation (not apostille), then UAE Embassy attestation in India. The marriage and birth certificates have to go through the full Embassy chain, not just the apostille.

How long does a UAE family-visa attestation file take?

A typical family file with marriage certificate and one or two birth certificates takes four to six weeks end to end, depending on the issuing state and any name-reconciliation step. The state-side step (SDM or Home Department) is the variable, Maharashtra and UP run faster than Kerala or Tamil Nadu on civil-document attestation. The MEA step is 2 to 3 working days, the UAE Embassy step through VFS or BLS is 6 to 10 working days normal or 4 to 6 days urgent. We give a written committed schedule before originals move.

Dubai e-visa or Abu Dhabi visa stamping, which one applies to my family file?

It depends on the Emirate of the sponsor's residence visa. For Dubai, after the attested family-relationship documents are submitted, the sponsor or employer issues an e-visa from the GDRFA portal; GAMCA and conventional visa stamping at the UAE Embassy in India are not part of the Dubai family file. For Abu Dhabi, GAMCA is mandatory for adult family members, the visa is sent to the UAE Embassy in India for stamping, and the dependent visits the UAE diplomatic mission in Delhi or a regional consulate for the stamp. The attestation chain is the same for both.

My wife is already in India and I am in Dubai. Do I need to fly back to India for the attestation?

No. Your wife (or a family member or trusted local contact in India) can hand off the original marriage and birth certificates to our Noida office, or we arrange doorstep pickup from your home Indian city. We run the full chain (SDM or Home Department, MEA, UAE Embassy through VFS or BLS, Arabic translation) and then tracked-courier the completed file to your UAE address. We send WhatsApp updates at each handoff and a written acknowledgement on receipt.

What documents are required?

The exact list depends on the file. For a degree apostille, the original degree certificate is the core document, with transcripts / consolidated marksheets, passport copy, and the destination authority's checklist as supporting. For a birth certificate apostille, the original municipal-corporation-issued certificate plus identity proof. For a marriage certificate apostille, the original registered civil certificate (Sub-Registrar / Marriage Registrar issued, not just religious ceremony). SiZA Global reviews the specific file scans on WhatsApp and confirms the exact document set required before originals move.
