When does an SSC certificate need apostille?
Usually for one of three reasons: the destination wants the complete academic record from Class 10 up, an employer is verifying schooling, or the SSC is doing duty as your base name and date-of-birth proof because other documents differ. Saudi-bound documents take apostille. UAE, Qatar and Kuwait cases take embassy attestation instead.
Which board issued my SSC and does it matter?
It matters for the government check before MEA step. CBSE and ICSE certificates are central-board documents handled uniformly. A state-board SSC goes through that state's Home Department or SDM, and verification speed varies by state. The board's name on the certificate, not your current city, decides where the prior attestation happens.
Does SSC need SDM or Home attestation?
Yes, one of the two, depending on the issuing state's practice. The SSC is school-board issued, so State HRD is the wrong counter for it. After the SDM or Home Department step, MEA places the apostille in 2 to 4 working days.
How long does SSC apostille take?
A week to ten days door to door is the normal run. Worn seals are the exception. A very old SSC sometimes needs a duplicate from the board before the SDM will touch it, and that board step is what stretches timelines.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a single official stamp issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on the back of an Indian document. Once placed, the document is accepted in any country that is a member of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, about 125 countries today, including the USA, UK, Italy, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia (since 2022), and Canada (since 2024). For non-Hague destinations such as UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya, and Egypt, MEA apostille alone is not enough, the document needs MEA attestation plus the destination country's embassy attestation in India.
Is apostille required for Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in December 2022. For Indian documents going to Saudi Arabia today, MEA apostille (after the relevant pre-step, State HRD for educational documents, SDM or Home Department for civil documents) is the standard India-side authentication. The previous Saudi Embassy + Cultural Attaché route was discontinued in December 2022; some Saudi employers still ask for QVP / Mosaddaqa qualification verification or SCFHS DataFlow PSV separately for licensed professions.
