MEA Apostille
Medical Certificate Apostille in India
Medical certificate apostille covers hospital, clinic and civil surgeon certificates going to Hague countries. SDM or Home Department attestation comes first, then MEA finishes in 2 to 4 working days. One warning saves money here. A GAMCA or Wafid medical for Gulf employment is verified inside that system and is never apostilled. SiZA reads your employer's checklist and confirms whether apostille is even the right step.

How to Get Medical Certificate Apostille in India
- 1SDM or Home Department attestationin the issuing state
- 2MEA apostillesubmitted through an authorised service provider
Medical certificate apostille covers hospital, clinic and civil surgeon documents: fitness certificates for overseas jobs, treatment and discharge records for insurance or legal use, and disability certificates supporting a dependent's case abroad.
Start with a document scan
For Hague destinations, the MEA apostille is what makes these records legally readable. The doctor's registration number and the institution's details should appear on the certificate, because that is what the attesting authorities check.
The steps are the civil-document ones. SDM or Home Department attestation comes first in the issuing state. MEA places the apostille in 2 to 4 working days after that. A certified translation follows where the destination asks for one, and non-Hague destinations like the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait take the embassy's stamp after MEA instead of an apostille.
The biggest source of wasted money here is the GAMCA confusion. A GAMCA or Wafid medical for Gulf employment is completed at an approved medical centre and verified inside that system. It is not apostilled, and paying to apostille it helps nobody.
SiZA reads the employer or embassy checklist first and tells you plainly whether your case needs a medical certificate apostille, an embassy step, or no attestation at all.

Medical certificate is one of the most misunderstood documents, applicants often confuse"GAMCA medical for Gulf" with"medical certificate apostille for Europe/USA/Canada". These are different documents with different processes.
- 2
For Hague countries (Italy, Germany, Canada, USA, Australia), the medical certificate type depends on visa purpose: study (university health declaration), work (employment medical fitness), immigration (panel-empanelled medical centre), travel (yellow fever, vaccination).
- 3
Issuing authority drives the route: hospital-issued medicals typically need SDM/Notary → MEA; civil-surgeon-issued medicals may need Home Department; CGHS/government-hospital medicals follow government attestation routes. Get this right before the certificate is printed.
- 4
For NRIs and applicants abroad: many destination countries now insist on medical certificates issued within a 30 to 90 day window. SiZA can coordinate India-side authentication while the medical itself is being issued, to compress the timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a medical certificate be apostilled in India?
They can be. Fitness certificates, treatment summaries and disability certificates from a hospital, clinic, civil surgeon or registered doctor are apostilled by MEA after SDM or Home Department attestation. The certificate should carry the doctor's registration number and the institution's details, because that is what gets verified.
Does a GAMCA medical certificate need apostille?
No. A GAMCA (now Wafid) medical for Gulf employment is completed at an approved medical centre and verified inside that system by the Gulf side directly. It is not apostilled and not embassy-attested. If an agent is quoting an apostille on a GAMCA slip, that is money spent on a step the receiving system never looks at.
What is the difference between apostille and embassy attestation for medical reports?
The destination decides. Hague countries (Germany, Italy, the USA, Saudi Arabia since 2022) accept the MEA apostille on the medical certificate. Non-Hague countries (UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya) need their embassy in India to attest it after MEA. Same document, different final stamp, and the receiving authority's checklist tells us which applies.
How long does medical certificate apostille take?
About ten days with a clean certificate, courier included. The common snag is the certificate itself rather than the process. If the doctor's registration number is missing or the hospital has to reissue it on proper letterhead, the hospital's turnaround sets the pace.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a single official stamp issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on the back of an Indian document. Once placed, the document is accepted in any country that is a member of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, about 125 countries today, including the USA, UK, Italy, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia (since 2022), and Canada (since 2024). For non-Hague destinations such as UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya, and Egypt, MEA apostille alone is not enough, the document needs MEA attestation plus the destination country's embassy attestation in India.
Is apostille required for Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in December 2022. For Indian documents going to Saudi Arabia today, MEA apostille (after the relevant pre-step, State HRD for educational documents, SDM or Home Department for civil documents) is the standard India-side authentication. The previous Saudi Embassy + Cultural Attaché route was discontinued in December 2022; some Saudi employers still ask for QVP / Mosaddaqa qualification verification or SCFHS DataFlow PSV separately for licensed professions. SiZA Global confirms which parallel tracks apply to your specific Saudi file at scan review.
