A contract is not a brochure. One wrong word can change the meaning. If a distributor agreement, employment contract or Power of Attorney is going to another country, the translator has to understand legal wording, document structure and the business purpose.

A contract file can get messy fast. A Pune company signs a supply agreement with a Spanish buyer. The English contract looks fine, but the Spanish bank asks for certified Spanish translation of the contract and Power of Attorney. A casual translation may miss defined terms like "effective date", "indemnity" or "authorised signatory". That is where legal document translation services need care.

We do not treat every contract like a court filing. Some translations are for internal review. Some are for embassy, bank, chamber, notary or court use. The accepted format changes with the reader.

SiZA Global Solutions Private Limited handles legal translation alongside apostille, attestation and commercial document work where needed. We tell you when translation alone is enough and when legalisation is also part of the file.

Legal contract translation has to preserve how the clauses work together

Defined terms are the first control point. If an agreement calls one company the Supplier on page one, that same term must carry the same meaning through the payment, warranty, indemnity and termination clauses. A translator should not switch between seller, vendor and supplier because the words sound similar. In a legal document, that casual change can create an argument that was not present in the signed English copy.

Numbers need the same discipline. Dates, notice periods, interest rates, service levels, liability caps and currency should be checked against the source after translation. We also track cross-references such as clause 8.2, Schedule B and Annexure 4. A translation can read smoothly and still fail if those links point to the wrong place.

For a long agreement, we create a short terminology sheet before the full legal translation starts. Your lawyer or contract owner can approve key names and terms early. That is more useful than debating the same word after fifty pages have already been translated.

Does a translated agreement need certification, apostille or embassy attestation?

Translation and legalisation solve different problems. Translation lets the foreign reader understand the agreement. Apostille or embassy attestation deals with the Indian signature, notary or public-authority chain. A board resolution or commercial Power of Attorney may need Chamber of Commerce authentication and MEA work before it is used abroad. An internal vendor contract may need no government stamp at all.

Ask the receiving bank, court, registry or counterparty for the exact filing format. If the final apostille or embassy stamp has to appear in the target language, translate after legalisation. If overseas counsel only needs a bilingual draft for negotiation, translate before signing and then update the final clauses after execution. These are two separate deliverables and should be named that way in the quote.

  • Internal review copy: usually no certification unless your company policy asks for it
  • Signed bilingual agreement: legal review should confirm which language controls if the versions differ
  • Court or registry filing: check whether a sworn translator is required in that country
  • Commercial document attestation: confirm Chamber, MEA, embassy and translation order before the original moves

Terminology, glossary, and certification format

  1. 1

For legal contracts, the reader matters: court, bank, embassy and internal teams may ask for different formats.

  2. 2

Signed documents should be translated from the final executed copy.

  3. 3

If the document has apostille or attestation, those stamps may need translation too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as legal contract translation?

Contracts, agreements, POA, affidavits, court papers, board resolutions and company authorisations can all fall under legal translation. The key point is that the translation must preserve legal meaning, names, dates and defined terms.

Is agreement translation services a real requirement for businesses?

Companies often need agreement translation when signing with a foreign client, filing with a bank, submitting to an embassy or sharing a contract with a non-English speaking authority.

Do legal documents need certified translation?

Often yes, but not always. Internal business review may not need certification. Embassy, court, bank or public authority use usually needs a signed and stamped translation, and sometimes notarisation or sworn translation.

Should I translate a draft contract or the signed contract?

Translate the signed final version if the translation will be submitted anywhere official. Draft translations are useful for negotiation, but they should not be used for final filing.

Can a Power of Attorney translation be done before attestation?

It depends on the receiving authority. If the final attestation stamp must appear in the translation, translate after attestation. If the foreign lawyer only needs to review the draft, translation can happen earlier.

Can SiZA handle legal translation for companies outside Delhi?

Most legal document translation services start with secure scans. If the original also needs attestation or apostille, we guide how it should move.

What should I send for a legal translation quote?

Send the final document, target language, purpose, deadline and any instruction from the lawyer, bank, embassy or client. If there are annexures, send those too.

Will translation change the legal value of the document?

Translation helps the reader understand the document. The original signed document remains the legal source unless the receiving authority says otherwise.

Italy requires Italian translation done by an empanelled translator for study visa documents. SiZA provided the translation with the translator's seal and declaration.
