Hague Apostille Convention member
Spain accepts MEA apostille since 1978
For Indian documents going to Spain, the India-side chain ends at MEA apostille, no destination embassy attestation is required. The pre-MEA step depends on document type (State HRD for educational, SDM or Home Department for civil, Chamber of Commerce for commercial). Certified translation is paired separately where the receiving authority requires it.
Spain apostille work from India is where the difference between certified translation and sworn translation matters most for Indian applicants. Spain only accepts certified Spanish translation by a Traductor Jurado (sworn translator) registered with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. An ordinary Indian translation, even with notary or apostille of the translation, is routinely rejected at Spanish consular submission and at autonomous community recognition stages. This is the single most common cause of rejection on Spain-bound files, and the cleanest way to avoid it is to confirm the translation route in writing before paying for any translation.
Spain is a Hague Apostille Convention member, so the India-side chain on educational documents is State HRD before MEA apostille, not SDM. Civil documents (birth, marriage, PCC) go through SDM or Home Department instead of HRD before MEA apostille. Each State HRD has its own working pace (8 to 45 working days). After apostille and Traductor Jurado translation, the document is ready for Spanish consular submission. NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) and homologación (degree-equivalence) are separate steps that happen in Spain after the India-side chain is complete.
Spain handles applicant categories in distinct lanes: student visa, non-lucrative residence visa (NLV, for applicants with passive income who do not intend to work), work visa, Highly Qualified Professional, family reunion, and the digital-nomad visa introduced in 2023. Each lane has its own consular checklist and its own homologación supporting paperwork for regulated professions. For doctors, nurses, engineers, lawyers and architects the homologación step at the relevant Spanish professional body decides whether the Indian qualification can be used to practise inside Spain, apostille and Traductor Jurado translation are necessary but not sufficient.
Send a clear scan of the document set on WhatsApp +91-9220161774 with the Spanish recipient named in one line, student visa for which university, NLV, work visa with Highly Qualified Professional category, family reunion, digital-nomad visa, or other. SiZA Global confirms the chain, the realistic working-day timeline for your State HRD, the Traductor Jurado page count, and a written quote that separates HRD fee, MEA fee, Spanish sworn-translation fee and SiZA service fee before originals move.

Errors that lead to destination-side rejection
- Using ordinary Indian-side certified translation for a Spanish submission, Spain accepts only Traductor Jurado (sworn translator registered with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs); this is the single most common cause of rejection
- Skipping the homologación step for regulated professions (doctor, nurse, engineer, lawyer, architect), apostille and Traductor Jurado translation are necessary but not sufficient for practising in Spain
- Confusing the digital nomad visa requirements with the non-lucrative residence visa, different paperwork, different income thresholds
- Routing the degree through SDM instead of State HRD, Spanish recipients via homologación expect the State HRD step
- Translating before apostille, Traductor Jurado stamps the translation against the apostilled document body and the apostille text itself
Why SiZA on this corridor
- Traductor Jurado network, Spanish translation accepted by Spanish authorities, autonomous communities, universities, and consulates, not ordinary Indian-side certified translation that gets rejected at intake
- NIE and homologación awareness, Spanish degree-equivalence and identification-number steps happen in Spain after India-side apostille and Traductor Jurado translation; we coordinate the document set so Spain-side steps land cleanly
- Visa-lane discipline: student, non-lucrative residence, work, family reunion, digital nomad, each lane has different consular paperwork and different homologación supporting documents for regulated professions
- Per-document chain expertise: degree through State HRD then MEA then Traductor Jurado translation; civil documents through SDM then MEA then Traductor Jurado
- Spain has the highest rejection risk on translation: we confirm Traductor Jurado specifically in writing before any translation is paid for, so applicants do not waste money on ordinary translation that gets rejected

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a single official stamp issued by India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on the back of an Indian document. Once placed, the document is accepted in any country that is a member of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, about 125 countries today, including the USA, UK, Italy, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia (since 2022), and Canada (since 2024). For non-Hague destinations such as UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya, and Egypt, MEA apostille alone is not enough, the document needs MEA attestation plus the destination country's embassy attestation in India.
Is apostille required for Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in December 2022. For Indian documents going to Saudi Arabia today, MEA apostille (after the relevant pre-step, State HRD for educational documents, SDM or Home Department for civil documents) is the standard India-side authentication. The previous Saudi Embassy + Cultural Attaché route was discontinued in December 2022; some Saudi employers still ask for QVP / Mosaddaqa qualification verification or SCFHS DataFlow PSV separately for licensed professions. SiZA Global confirms which parallel tracks apply to your specific Saudi file at scan review.
