MEA Apostille

Indonesia Apostille Services from India

Indonesia’s Apostille Convention entered into force on 4 June 2022. For covered Indian public documents used in Indonesia, the normal treaty route is Indian MEA apostille—not Indonesian embassy legalisation. The receiving authority can still require a recent document, certified copy, Bahasa Indonesia translation or a separate substantive approval.

Indonesia and India are both parties to the Apostille Convention. An Indian apostille authenticates the public signature or seal so the covered document can be presented in Indonesia without the former embassy-legalisation chain.

The document must first be eligible for apostille. Educational, personal and commercial records can have different pre-authentication paths in India. A scan review should identify the issuing authority, state, document condition and destination purpose before the original moves.

Apostille does not verify the truth of every statement, approve a work or residence permit, or recognise a professional qualification. Indonesian immigration, employer, university or regulator may conduct those separate checks.

Translation is also separate. If the Indonesian recipient requires Bahasa Indonesia, confirm whether it wants the translation before or after apostille and whether a particular translator or certification is prescribed.

Illustrated route

Visual guide to the Indonesia apostille route

Why older Indonesia attestation advice is wrong

Pages written before June 2022 often describe MEA authentication followed by Indonesian embassy legalisation. That advice predates Indonesia’s Apostille Convention entry into force.

For a covered Indian public document presented in Indonesia today, use the apostille route. If a recipient still sends an older embassy checklist, ask it to confirm the requirement in writing and identify whether the document falls outside the Convention or needs a different service.

Apostille is only the authentication layer

Apostille confirms the origin of a public signature or seal. It does not decide visa eligibility, professional registration, academic equivalence or document freshness.

Confirm those receiving rules before dispatch, particularly for PCCs, regulated professions, admissions and immigration files. This separates a correct apostille from a complete Indonesian application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Indonesia a Hague Apostille country?

Yes. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Indonesia on 4 June 2022.

Do Indian documents need Indonesian embassy attestation?

Normally not when the document is a covered public document bearing a valid Indian apostille. Confirm exceptional or non-public-document requirements with the recipient.

Which Indian documents can be apostilled for Indonesia?

Common examples include eligible educational, civil, PCC and commercial documents. Each category must follow its proper Indian pre-authentication route.

Is Bahasa Indonesia translation required?

It depends on the receiving authority. Translation is not created by the apostille and should follow the recipient’s language and certification instructions.

Does apostille guarantee visa or licence approval?

No. It authenticates the document’s public signature or seal. Immigration, universities, employers and professional regulators make separate decisions.

What should I send for an Indonesia route check?

Send a clear scan, issuing state, document purpose, Indonesian recipient and its written checklist.
