Algeria’s July 2026 accession changes the authentication route described by older attestation pages. India and Algeria can now use the Apostille Convention for covered public documents, subject to the Convention’s country relationships and scope.
Indian educational, personal and commercial records still need the correct pre-authentication for their category before MEA apostille. The route depends on issuer, issuing state, document form and use—not simply the destination country.
The apostille replaces diplomatic or consular legalisation for covered documents; it does not replace Algerian translation, immigration, employment, academic-equivalence or professional requirements.
The change is new. A recipient may still circulate an older embassy-attestation checklist. Ask it to confirm the current requirement in writing and determine whether the specific record is a public document covered by the Convention.

Before that date, Indian documents for Algeria commonly followed diplomatic or consular legalisation. The Apostille Convention now removes that additional legalisation requirement for covered public documents between countries for which the Convention relationship applies.
Search results and saved employer checklists may lag behind the legal change. Date-check every Algeria attestation instruction and ask the recipient to update any legacy demand before paying for an unnecessary embassy step.
How to handle a legacy embassy checklist
Send the recipient a copy of the new apostille-route information and ask whether its checklist has been revised. Also ask whether the record is within the Convention’s scope and whether a French or Arabic translation must accompany it.
Do not assume that apostille eliminates substantive processing. An Algerian authority can still assess qualification equivalence, professional eligibility, translation, freshness and filing form.
