A marketing analyst at HUL Mumbai with five years of FMCG brand-management experience, BBA from Symbiosis Pune 2018, received an LBS MBA admission to the London Business School class of 2027 in March 2026. The LBS CAS letter for the UK Student Visa was issued for the September 2026 intake. The visa file at the UK Visa Application Centre VFS Delhi needed apostille on her Symbiosis Pune BBA degree, her class-twelve Maharashtra State Board certificate, her birth certificate from the Pune Municipal Corporation, and a fresh PCC from the Mumbai Passport Seva Kendra Lower Parel. The UK has been a Hague apostille destination for Indian documents since 1965, so the older Indian High Commission London attestation step was not in the route. The Maharashtra HRD step ran through the State Higher Education Department Mantralaya Mumbai. MEA apostille at Patiala House Delhi. Around three weeks end to end. UK Student Visa stamped at VFS Delhi two weeks after the documents reached LBS. The typical arrival is at Heathrow for the August 2026 LBS orientation. The Graduate Route at the end of her one-year MBA will give her two years of unrestricted work in the UK, after which the apostille set she did this April will be referenced again for the Skilled Worker visa conversion, the eventual Indefinite Leave to Remain application, and any UK professional body registration she takes up.

That arc is the arc behind every Indian student leaving for a UK one-year Master's. The UK one-year Master's is one of the most disciplined moves an Indian student can make. Twelve months of taught study, a CAS letter from a single named UK institution, a Student Visa application with a clear and bounded financial requirement, and a Graduate Route at the end that gives two years of unrestricted work search. Compared to a US four-year doctorate or a Canadian study-permit-and-PNP route, the UK student journey is short, focused and structured. For working professionals doing an MBA, MS or LLM after three to seven years in their Indian career, the UK has become the most popular destination since 2022. This page covers what the Indian student headed to a UK university in the 2026 intake actually needs to do on the document side.

Is the UK Graduate Route still available, and why your apostille set matters

The Graduate Route is the part of the UK student journey that most Indian families underweigh during the admissions decision. It is the part that matters most for the long-arc apostille work.

The Graduate Route was retained in May 2024 after the Migration Advisory Committee review and remains in place for the 2026 intake. Two years of unrestricted post-study work permission for Master's graduates, three years for PhD graduates, leading to a Skilled Worker visa if the candidate finds sponsorship within the window. The post-study window is when the apostilled Indian degree becomes operationally important: at the Skilled Worker conversion, the UK employer's compliance officer pulls the Certificate of Sponsorship paperwork and confirms the academic credential matches the role's salary tier. A clean MEA apostille at this stage avoids the back-and-forth with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that catches some Graduate Route holders.

Beyond Skilled Worker, the apostille set comes back at other moments. National Insurance number application, where the UK Department for Work and Pensions asks for foreign-document verification on some applications. Dependant visa sponsorship, where the candidate sponsors a spouse after marriage in India. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) under the long-residence route, typically five to ten years after arrival, where UKVI asks for the apostilled birth certificate and any other documents the candidate used at original Student Visa stage. UK citizenship under the Naturalisation as a British Citizen (Form AN) route, where the apostilled documents are referenced again at the citizenship interview.

Doing the apostille work cleanly in India before flying is the foundation for that arc.

What documents does the UK Student Visa require?

The UKVI checklist for the Student Visa (Tier 4 in older terminology) is fairly standard. The candidate needs the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) reference number from the UK university, a valid passport, evidence of sufficient funds for tuition plus first-year living costs, a TB test certificate (mandatory for India-resident applicants), an academic qualification meeting the university's requirement, English language proficiency evidence (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, or the university's Medium of Instruction letter), and the visa application fee plus the Immigration Health Surcharge payment.

Where Indian academic documents need apostille on the Student Visa itself: most UK universities accept the degree certificate at the application stage with direct transcript verification from the Indian university. Some universities (Imperial College London, LSE, the engineering departments at Cambridge and Oxford, and a handful of others) prefer MEA-apostilled documents at enrolment, particularly where the candidate's degree is from a smaller Indian institute that does not have an established verification relationship with the UK university.

The MEA apostille on the birth certificate matters for the National Insurance number application after arrival, for dependant sponsorship, and for the ILR or citizenship application years later. Doing it once in India is cheaper than triggering it from a UK address later.

Do Indian STEM students need ATAS clearance for the UK?

A subset of UK Master's and PhD programmes in sensitive STEM fields require Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance before the Student Visa can be applied for. ATAS is a UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office security check on the specific research area the candidate will be studying. The clearance is sought by the candidate (not the university) before the visa application is filed.

ATAS does not require apostilled documents from India, but it does ask for the candidate's complete academic CV with research areas listed. The university's offer letter or admissions email confirms whether ATAS is needed.

Subjects that typically need ATAS for Indian students in 2026: aerospace engineering, nuclear engineering, advanced materials, computer science research in cryptography or AI security, biological sciences in pathogen research, chemistry research, and parts of physics. The ATAS application takes four to eight weeks. Plan around it; an ATAS-required application that does not start the ATAS process early enough misses the intake.

Do UK universities need certified translation, or just an MOI certificate?

Most Indian undergraduate degrees and marksheets are issued in English (since English is the medium of instruction in most Indian universities). Certified translation is rarely required for the UK Student Visa itself. Where translation comes up.

Birth certificates issued in regional languages (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Gujarati). The Indian Municipal Corporation can usually issue a bilingual or English version on request. If not, certified translation by a UK-listed or India-listed translator is the workaround.

Marriage certificates issued in regional language only (relevant for the spouse of a Student Visa applicant joining as a dependant).

Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) certificates from the issuing Indian university, where the Bachelor's degree is from an institute that operated in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali or another regional language. The MOI certificate is a one-page letter from the registrar stating that all instruction and examinations were conducted in English. It is materially more useful than translating individual semester marksheets and is what UKVI prefers to see.

How long does the in India apostille take for a UK Student Visa?

For an Indian student aiming at the September UK intake, start the in India document work in May or June at the latest. The Student Visa is filed once the CAS letter is in hand; the apostilled set should be ready before then. Run in parallel, the steps are:

Step Typical time
State HRD attestation on the degree 5 to 14 working days
MEA apostille at Patiala House, Delhi 3 to 5 working days
Certified translation (regional-language birth certificate only) 2 to 4 working days
Long-form birth certificate re-issue (pre-2000 certificates) 7 to 21 working days
PSK Police Clearance Certificate (where requested) 7 to 21 working days
TB test at an IOM-approved clinic (UK-specific, valid 6 months) 1 to 3 working days

State HRD on the degree runs through the issuing state's office (Maharashtra Mantralaya Mumbai, Karnataka SHED Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu DTE Guindy, Telangana SHED Tarnaka, AP SHED Mangalagiri, Punjab SHED Mohali). The UK is more forgiving than the GCC on the HRD requirement, so SDM-route attestation works for personal documents, but HRD is safer for the degree. The PSK PCC is usually not asked at the Student Visa stage, but the later Skilled Worker conversion asks for it.

Which UK universities have the most Indian students?

The Russell Group institutions remain the strongest pull on Indian Master's intake: Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London, UCL, LSE, King's College London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Warwick, Durham, Glasgow, Birmingham, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff, Queen Mary, Southampton, Exeter, Newcastle, York. Imperial College, Warwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol have particularly strong Indian cohorts in computer science, data science, finance, MBA and engineering programmes.

Outside the Russell Group, Bath, Loughborough, Strathclyde, Heriot-Watt, Surrey, Reading, Kent and the post-92 university group (Coventry, Brunel, Northumbria, City St George's, Leicester) carry meaningful Indian student volume in business, design, hospitality, computing and applied engineering programmes.

What SiZA handles in India for a UK student file

A UK student file reaches SiZA after the unconditional or conditional offer is in hand and the CAS letter is being processed. The candidate sends scans of the Bachelor's degree, marksheets, transcript, birth certificate, passport, university offer and any prior attestations on WhatsApp to +91 9220161774. We confirm the state HRD path, whether an MOI certificate from the issuing university is needed, whether a long-form birth certificate re-issue is needed, the realistic timeline and the cost end to end before any original moves.

When the originals reach our Noida office at C-25, C Block, Sector 8, the work runs state HRD where applicable, MEA apostille on the degree, marksheets, transcript and birth certificate at the Patiala House Delhi counter, certified translation of any regional-language documents by a UK-listed translator, and tracked return courier to the candidate or family. The UK has been a Hague apostille destination for Indian documents since 1965, so the route stays clean through MEA Patiala House. The student receives the apostilled set before the visa interview or before travel.

What SiZA does not handle: the IELTS, TOEFL or PTE exam, the TB test at the IOM-approved clinic, the Student Visa interview at VFS Delhi, the CAS issuance from the UK university, the ATAS application (the candidate files this directly with the UK FCDO), or the university enrolment after arrival.
