How Long Does Apostille Take in India? Complete Timeline by State and Document

SiZA Global24 April 20268 min read

Apostille timelines vary significantly depending on your state, document type, and the service level you choose. This guide gives realistic timelines for each step — HRD, MEA, and translation — so you can plan your documentation with confidence.

Why Timelines Matter

Missing a university application deadline or visa appointment because your apostille was delayed is a serious setback. Understanding realistic timelines — not best-case estimates — helps you plan properly.

The Full Apostille Timeline

The apostille process has three stages, each with its own timeline:

Stage 1: HRD Attestation (For Educational Documents)

| State | Standard | Tatkal |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra | 10–15 days | 5–7 days |
| Tamil Nadu | 10–15 days | 5–7 days |
| Karnataka | 7–12 days | 4–5 days |
| Delhi | 7–10 days | 3–5 days |
| Telangana | 10–15 days | 5–7 days |
| Uttar Pradesh | 15–20 days | 7–10 days |
| Gujarat | 7–10 days | 4–5 days |

Note: Tatkal is not officially available in all states for all document types.

Stage 2: MEA Apostille

  • Standard: 5–10 working days
  • Tatkal (urgent): 2–5 working days (available for most documents)
  • MEA has multiple processing centers across India

Stage 3: Certified Translation

  • Most languages: 2–5 working days
  • Italian (Embassy empanelled): 4–7 working days
  • Czech/Slovak sworn translation: 5–8 working days

Total Timeline Estimates

For European countries (apostille + translation):

  • Standard: 4–6 weeks total

  • With Tatkal: 2–3 weeks total

For GCC countries (attestation chain + embassy):
  • Standard: 6–10 weeks total

  • Express processing: 3–5 weeks total

What Causes Delays?

  • University verification delays — Some universities take weeks to respond to HRD department queries
  • Incomplete documents — Missing notarization or wrong form of document
  • Document in regional language — Additional translation step required before HRD
  • Public holidays — State and central government holidays affect processing
  • High volume periods — September–January (European university admissions) can be peak periods
