Planning to study in Italy? Here is every document you need, which ones need apostille, which need Italian translation, and the exact sequence for preparing your visa application package.
Documents Required for Italy Student Visa (D Visa)
Italy requires a specific set of documents for its long-stay student visa (Type D). The core list is:
- Degree Certificate — apostilled + Italian translation
- Marksheets / Academic Transcripts — apostilled + Italian translation
- Birth Certificate — apostilled + Italian translation
- Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — apostilled + Italian translation
- Passport (valid for the duration of study)
- University Admission / Pre-enrollment Letter from the Italian university
- Bank Statement showing sufficient funds
- Accommodation Proof in Italy
- Passport photographs
- Migration Certificate — apostilled + Italian translation
- School Leaving Certificate (10th/12th) — apostilled + Italian translation
Apostille vs Attestation for Italy
Italy is a Hague Convention country. You need MEA apostille ONLY — you do NOT need Italian embassy attestation. All apostilled documents must then be certified-translated into Italian.
The Italian Embassy Empanelled Translator Requirement
This is critical and often overlooked: the Italian Embassy in New Delhi and the Italian Consulate in Mumbai only accept translations done by translators they have officially empanelled (approved). Generic certified translations are frequently rejected.
SiZA Global works with Italian Embassy and Consulate empanelled translators, ensuring your translations are accepted without question.
The Correct Sequence
- Get HRD attestation on educational documents
- Get MEA apostille on all required documents
- Get Italian translation done by an empanelled translator
- Submit the complete package to VFS Italy for visa application
Timeline
Allow 4–6 weeks minimum for the complete process:
- HRD attestation: 1–2 weeks
- MEA apostille: 1–2 weeks
- Italian translation: 3–5 days
- VFS / Consulate appointment: varies by city
Common Mistakes for Italy Visa
- Using non-empanelled translators — documents get rejected at the consulate
- Submitting non-apostilled documents — Italy only accepts apostille
- Missing the migration certificate — required for degree verification
- Insufficient bank statement — Italy requires proof of adequate financial support
